Faculty Profile: Dr. Xing
Dr. Xing is entering her third year as a professor at Hofstra this fall. Before working at our University, she received her Ph.D. from West Virginia University and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard University. She ultimately chose Hofstra because of the positive environment of the department and the enthusiasm she saw in students while visiting. Every day, numerous students attend her office hours. While some professors would describe feeling overwhelmed by the number of students who come with questions, she shared that it excites her that her students are willing to put in the work required to excel in the subject.
Dr. Xing’s research consists of electro-organic chemistry and the production of synthetic methodologies. Her research aims to reduce chemists’ exposure to toxic redox agents and reduce the amount of waste produced by experimentation while still creating strong results. One of the methods she has been testing is organic electrosynthesis; an electric current activates organic molecules by altering the number of electrons they contain. The results from this method of experimentation have differed significantly from those of traditional methods, which has been exciting for Dr. Xing. Another method she has been testing is visible-light photocatalysis for C-H functionalization and polymer degradation.
` When Dr. Xing is not teaching, you can find her with her kids and dogs, painting, hiking, or traveling.
