SMACS Hosts Local Girl Scouts

In May, our SMACS chapter invited a local Girl Scouts troupe to a meeting to conduct various experiments ! One of the experiments they completed together, “Slow the Glow”, was selected by Dr. Ronald D’Amelia and his colleagues during an ACS Senior Chemists Committee meeting. Using resources provided by the American Chemical Society, the group tested the intensity of glow sticks after placing them in cups of water of various temperatures. SMACS President, Julia Nastasi, felt that the experiment was such a success because of how interactive it was; because the girls had so much fun completing it, they were excited to hear about the science behind it. To give the girls an opportunity to speak with SMACS members, the group also extracted DNA from strawberries and made slime!

SMACS hopes to continue to carry on the tradition of hosting the Girl Scouts to experiment and learn more about the scientific method!
